The Art Workers’ Guild
.
Demonstrations are an invaluable way to understand the creative process, and consider how the material qualities of an artefact can shape our understanding of its origins and potential.
Material Witness, a collaboration between the Guild, the Courtauld Institute and the CHASE consortium of universities, enabled History of Art students and academics to acquire a physical understanding of the material culture they are studying, such as stone-carving and tapestry. Guild members demonstrated spinning, bookbinding, lettering, and gilding, and shed light on the sensibilities behind each process.
