Brian trained as an engineering patternmaker (wood) and later qualified as a handicraft teacher. He taught woodwork, metalwork and engineering drawing for 24 years.

In 1978 Brian became acquainted with AR. Bultitude, Past Master of Art Workers’ Guild who was instrumental in helping him to become a Master Bow maker.

Tunnicliffe bows are mainly used by professional violin, viola, cello and double bass players. Many of these are members of the top London Orchestras e.g. LSO, RPO, as well as the leading baroque orchestras e.g. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra.

Commissions have also come from Europe, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and Moscow.
