Category Architectural Historian

Region Scotland

Martin Robertson’s most serious and lasting contribution to architectural history has been his role in the completion of the National Resurvey of Buildings of Special Architectural and Historic Interest in England during the 1980s when he was working for English Heritage. This was principally a management role, but he was directly concerned in the scope, organisation, training of staff, selection of buildings and standards of research and presentation of the whole. Martin’s work also included personally finding, inspecting, researching and writing up very many individual buildings which remain listed and their descriptions in use for planning purposes.

In more recent years, he has worked extensively in the Resurvey of Wales for Cadw, the current list descriptions for Paddington and Victoria Stations in London and the complete lists for the communities of Llandaff, St Donats and Monmouth in Wales. This work over forty years has given him a very wide ranging knowledge and experience of almost all British types of historic buildings, and the ability to compare them and recognise their importance. Martin continues to use this knowledge in his advisory work today.
