Clive James Richards MPhil PhD(RCA) FRSA is Emeritus Professor of Birmingham City University (BCU) where he was Director of Research for Art & Design until 2014 and is a visiting professor to Brighton University. Prior to BCU, he was for many years Professor of Information Design at Coventry University. He has worked in a wide range of art and design fields, including commercial graphic design and technical illustration, academic research, university teaching, PhD supervision, higher education management and professional body work.
A pioneer in British art school computer animation, examples of his computer art are held in the Victoria & Albert museum collections. His doctoral study on diagrammatics at the Royal College of Art, London, formed the grounding for his continuing theoretical research and practice-based work in information design.
Clive is the President of the International Institute for Information Design based in Vienna and a director on the Board of the Simplification Centre, London. He practices graphic design and higher education management consultancy from his studio in Earlsdon, Coventry. Clive was inspired by the Eagle comic of the 1950s to pursue a career in art and design – and still is.
