Originally industrially trained, I have retained a liking for early production techniques, part moulded, part hand formed and a domestic scale.
Forms are traditional and I use the ‘ratio of perfection’ 2:1. Glazes and pigments are taken from early recipes, some dating from the 9 th Century.
Decoration is applied in layered washes, within the bowl, onto a raw powdery surface, before being fired. Stylistic influences come from the cultures that have also employed this tin glaze technique. In Persia, Italy, The Netherlands and early industrial England.
Recent developments from a residency in Finland come from a collared Bronze Age bowl. A porcelain/flax body with imprinted patterns that reveal themselves within the body in its translucency. The fascination with the open bowl, its internal curve and designs within still continues.
