Biography
Kirsty McDougall was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and brought up in Dunkeld, Perthshire. She studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, before completing an MA at the Royal College of Art.
In 2002, Kirsty won the prize for woven textiles at Texprint, resulting in work being shown in Paris and Hong Kong. Following this, the Victoria and Albert Museum acquired two examples of her woven textiles as an example of the marriage between craft and industry for their Permanent Collection of European Textiles.
Kirsty worked freelance for companies such as Louis Vuitton, Jaeger, Gifford’s Circus, Nike, Noel Stewart Millenary, Anne Tyrell Design, Biba, Bella Freud and has produced concept fabrics for the re-branding of Liberty.
In 2006, together with photographer Guy Hills, ‘Hills McDougall’ and ‘Dashing Tweeds’ was launched. The company produces innovative suiting and bespoke fabrics for clients such as Savile Row, Tom Ford, Billionaire Boys Club, Henry Holland, Philip Treacy, Converse trainers, Holly Fulton, Brookes Saddles, Radley Handbags, Gieves and Hawkes and the film industry. The development of ‘lumatwill’, a reflective tweed suiting has led to a small collection of menswear being designed with Savile Row tailors that has launched in Dover Street Market in London and Beams Gallery and Comme Des Garcons Isetan in Tokyo. A range of cycling wear and accessories are developed for private clients.
The company endeavours to work in collaboration with British industry and all production is done within the UK.
A Dashing Tweeds outfit was recently shown in the ‘Sport Versus Fashion’ exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The company was also featured on the BBC documentary series, ‘British Style Genius’ and ‘Tweed’ on BBC 4. Other exhibitions include Jerwood Contemporary Makers, Warp and Weft at the National Wool Museum in Wales and Fish and Chips Twice Please in Vienna.
Kirsty is currently Senior Lecturer of Woven Textiles and Subject Leader of Textiles at the University of Brighton as well as Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art.
