Introduction
Throughout her career Joyce Petschek has experimented with all types of needlework, but her life-long passion became bargello, a technique that depends on bold patterns and the richness of colour for its heightened effect. Her awareness of heightened colour combinations began at Vassar College where as an Art History major she received her Bachelor of Arts in painting and sculpture, later completing her Masters in Fine Arts at Radcliffe College. Her knowledge of conscious colour combinations formed the text of needlework book “Beautiful Bargello” published in 1997 by Collins and Brown, UK, as well as the Book of the Month Club, USA.
For more than thirty years she has attended Tibetan Dzogchen teachings and has been involved with meditative practises. Joyce believes that the rhythm of bargello’s repetitive patterns resonates closely with meditation, integrating the visionary quality of the ‘sixth sense’ while creating her designs. Through “Bargello Arts” she experiments with her unique colour palette and her distinctive approach to pattern, creating exceptional and innovative designs for wall textiles and furniture coverings, both private and public commissions, including English Heritage, Helmsley Castle, North Yorkshire.
