Introduction

Alison Jensen is an Anglo-Dane who studied drawing and painting at the Byam Shaw School and the Royal Academy Schools in London, and at the Kongelige Akademie in Copenhagen. She divides her time between her homes in Bermondsey and on the north west coast of Sj?lland, Denmark. The larger part of her work centres around painting portraits in oils and drawing musicians, dancers and actors rehearsal. Her portraits, in which the sitter is approximately life-size, can vary from a small head study to a three-quarter length figure on a 40’’ x 30’’ canvas. These are, as a rule, painted in the sitter’s home. Studies of performers, on paper in either pencil or in ink and wash are made in a very wide variety of venues, from concert hall to cathedral practice room.  In her studio in Denmark, Alison Jensen’s work revolves around the local landscape of sea, sand-dunes, grasses and the pine and birch woods which surround her house. Lately she has been experimenting with needlework, using coloured wools to design her favourite motives of grasses and trees directly onto tapestry canvas.
