Biography

Born and brought up in The Black Country, Alan Greening studied architecture at The Architectural Association, London and returned to become their First-Year Tutor and a Course Master on their postgraduate Building-Conservation Course. He has tutored at several colleges of art and schools of architecture and is now a tutor and lecturer at Cambridge University.

Practice
A design partnership was established at Hampstead, London, in 1975, relocating to Covent Garden. Since 1980 Alan Greening has developed the practice along historic-building design, and conversion guidelines, relocating to Hertford in 1982 and Southwold in 2000.

Work has specialized and concentrated on works to historic buildings with landscapes, providing services in design and conversion, historic repairs, or fine-conservation requirements and skills. In 1995 He was invited to become a specialist consultant to English Heritage on churches and larger domestic buildings and in the following year he became a postgraduate tutor on the Architectural Association School of Architecture’s Building Conservation course.

The practice relocated to the Suffolk Coast in 2000, since which the office has provided a range of conservation-architecture services involving historic domestic and church buildings from Norfolk, through, Suffolk to Essex and Hertfordshire, as well as in Kent. Historic research, investigations and reports are undertaken.

The practice balances professional project work, education and extra-professional work in order to remain in the forefront of practice and current conservation issues.
