Ripon Cathedral collaboration

Wednesday, 04 April 2012

Bros. Oliver Caroe (architect) and Sally Scott (glass artist) have been collaborating on a new glass porch with sand-blasted windows which has now opened its doors. Known as the Narthex project, the design originated at Caroe & Partners as a millennium project in 1999. Oliver Caroe was appointed Cathedral Architect in 2010 (and is now Surveyor to the Fabric of St Paul’s Cathedral). Sally Scott was appointed through an invited competition, which she won having presented preliminary designs. The partnership led to a careful integration of the artwork into the design of the framing porches – including ensuring that the proportions of the Tympana suited her design. LED edge-lighting gives it extra luminosity.
