Introduction

Oliver Caroe is a Director of Caroe Architecture Ltd (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) and is also an Associate of Cambridge Architectural Research (www.carltd.com). 

The Practice is dedicated both to the care of historical places and to the creation of innovative new buildings and is expert at working in sensitive areas: complex urban centres, delicate landscapes and the historic built environment.

Oliver’s dual role reflects a deep interest in knowledge and research, combined with good architecture. Project work is taken into Cambridge Architectural Research, where research expertise and skills are available to undertake well-informed, thoroughly researched architectural projects - especially in relation to sustainability and historic buildings.

Oliver Caroe is the great grandson of W. D. Caroe - an early Brother of the Guild.  It is not every Architect that gets the chance to work on two fine buildings designed by a famous ancestor: Oliver has recently completed the design for a major £20m programme of refurbishment at Millbank Island.
 
Built in 1906 for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, this landmark building opposite the Palace of Westminster is his great grandfather’s magnum opus. It is being given a new life as offices for Peers and their secretariat. Oliver is also working on repairs to Vann, the Grade II* listed Caroe family house in Surrey.
 
Before setting up his own practice, Oliver was a Partner at Purcell Miller Tritton, and before that worked for Caroe & Partners. The practice, run by his late father Martin, specialises in the care of ecclesiastical and historic buildings. Oliver’s track record is equally strong as a designer of new buildings, often within sensitive historic settings, such as the award-wining visitor centre for Scampston Hall in Yorkshire.
 
Oliver is an AABC accredited specialist in conservation and has expertise in conserving, repairing and improving churches, from the medieval through to the Victorian. He takes a hands-on approach, and you are just as likely to find him abseiling down the face of a medieval abbey examining masonry as poring over drawings in the office.
 
Complementing his wide experience in the repair and conservation of fine historic buildings, including Ely Cathedral and Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, he has also honed his design and project management skills on student housing projects and contemporary arts centres.
 
Oliver is committed to creating delightful and functional places which resonate with a sensitive historic setting or satisfy the need to build anew.
