Introduction

Having started a free-lance furniture design practice in 1960, in 1975 Martin Grierson opened his own workshop with the intention of relating ideas of fine craftsmanship to contemporary design.  From 1975 to 2006 the workshop has taken on increasingly large and prestigious commissions including all the seating in The Sainsbury Wing of The National Gallery.  Clients have included Cambridge Colleges, Museums and Galleries, Corporate Institutions, churches and private clients.  Holder of numerous Craft Guild Marks awarded by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, the prestigious Claxton Stevens Award and The Worshipful Company’s Jubilee competition for seating at The Wallace Collection.  Now in his seventies, Martin has decided to ease off a little and concentrate on making a few special pieces each year.  He sees this as an opportunity to return to the original concept of exploring interesting aspects of fine craftsmanship in relationship to modern work.  The "Falling Water" cabinet has been a collaboration with a wonderful wood carver Georgy Mekrtichian.
