Introduction

Janice Lawrence took a degree in geography at the London School of Economics before turning to embroidery. Textiles and drawing had always been part of life and after seeing an exhibition of the new wave of embroidery she enrolled for a City and Guilds course at the London College of Fashion where she attained distinction. She has taught textiles with an emphasis on stitched and painted fabrics, given lectures and acted as visiting artist in schools. She has had her work exhibited at St. Paul’s, the Commonwealth Institute, Satrain House Gallery, Hereford Cathedral, Hyde Park Gallery and Collins Gallery - Glasgow amongst others. Commissions have come from several churches in the south-east to design and make altar frontals and matching accessories. Also ceremonial fabrics for a variety of private and public clients. She has also designed and supervised embroideries for local churches and a millennium panel for the Orpheus Centre, Godstone. Her secular work has been purchased and commissioned by private collectors. These include pictures, wall hangings, cushions and painted scarves. Her work appears in books and magazines and has contributed to publicity material and advertising.
