Introduction
Jane Muir has worked from her studio in Weston Turville since 1969. She has undertaken
numerous public and private commissions in mosaic and has developed her own work in
painting and etching.
After gaining an M.A. in history at Oxford University, she studied painting and sculpture
at Middlesborough College of Art and later specialised in mosaic, making several study
visits to Italy.
She is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Design, a founder member of the International
Association of Contemporary Artists in Mosaic, patron of the British Association for
Modern Mosaic, a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and of the Art Workers
Guild of St. George.
Jane Muir was Moderator of the HND course in Public Art at Chelsea School of Art and
taught at West Dean College Sussex. She served as a governor of Camberwell School of
Art and Crafts for a number of years and is past a chairman.
Her mosaics, painting and etchings are in public and private collections at home and abroad,
including St. Vivian Art Gallery Swansea, The Open University Sheffield, Alexandria Art
Gallery Egypt and Buckinghamshire County Museum, Corning Museum, U.S.A.
Her videos, ‘Mosaic as Art’ and ‘New Directions in Mosaic’ are obtainable from VIDIAN, Veldt
