Introduction
George Saumarez Smith is a British architect. Educated at Winchester College and Edinburgh University, George graduated with a First Class Degree and a Diploma with Distinction in Architecture. George Saumarez Smith qualified as an architect in 1998.
George joined ADAM Architecture in 2003, and became a Director in 2004. His work includes both new buildings and alterations, extensions and repairs to historic properties, and he has also been involved in design consultancy and urban masterplanning on various projects. His drawings have been exhibited and published widely, both in the UK and abroad. He has recently completed a new Palladian house in Newbury, England which received the Best Craftsmanship Award at the Brick Awards 2008. The new two-storey house combines simple classical details with local materials following the established architectural tradition of the area. In 2006 George was the Overall Winner of the RIBA Downland Prize and in the same year he also received a Commendation from the Georgian Group Architectural Awards. Some of his work was exhibited in 1996 and 2000 at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and in 1999 at the RIBA Architecture Gallery. In May 2010 an exhibition titled “Three Classicists” is being held at the RIBA showing the drawings of three young classical designers: Ben Pentreath, George Saumarez Smith and Francis Terry.
