Introduction
Gareth Mason
Introduction
Colour has a widely acknowledged potency for the artist but less well documented is the arena of gesture, texture and that particularly ceramic phenomenon of metamorphosis through fire. This is my territory. I engage with a rich seam of materials that in their fired state allude to every point on the emotional spectrum. Qualities array from visceral red to cool aqua, from corrosion and encrustation to flawless satin. I will pause at any point on this continuum from the sublime to the abyss in pursuit of the tension I seek. It is a restless process; a search with no clear goal. The resultant surfaces are paintings that leave much unsaid, much open to interpretation.
My intention is always to leave space for discovery. For me, ceramics is a chink on the awesome mysteries that have cowed humanity since the dawn of consciousness. They cow us still for all our civilisation and progress. The DNA of ceramics is the DNA of wonder. There has to be room for mystery.
I have been a member of the Art Workers Guild since 2004. I exhibit consistently at home and abroad.
