Introduction
Caroline Webb studied typography at the University of Reading and since 1984 has been working as a letter-carver. Caroline eschews ‘experimental’ lettering preferring to explore and develop traditional letterforms in designs that respect content. She works almost entirely to commission carving inscriptions in wood and stone. Apart from a spell working with a letter carver in the USA and as assistant to book designer Humphrey Stone she has always worked alone. Caroline has designed medals for The Royal Mint and collaborated for over 20 years with the poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, contributing to major exhibitions and installations. She has taught lettering at Reading University and is a member of Memorials by Artists and Letter Exchange.
