Biography
1. Anthony Paine Biography January 2008
Anthony
Paine is a fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers,
a fellow of the British Interior Design Association,
and has been a member of the Artworkers Guild since
1990, acting as Honorary Secretary from 1993 –
2004.
He uses the classical architectural language
with a modern sensibility in a contemporary context.
Dynamic planning, wit and fine detailing are applied
to all projects whether a new house, shop interior or
a piece of bespoke furniture.
As well as designing, remodelling,
extending and decorating many private houses, his work
has included a hotel in Frankfurt, Georgian shops in
Spitalfields, a new traditional wooden chalet in Gstaad,
an extended farmhouse complex in Provence and a folly
beside the Baltic. He won The World of Interiors award
for the Rotunda Bookroom at the British Interior Design
Exhibition in 1990. He was listed in House and Garden’s
top interior designers for 2006.
In 1994 Anthony Paine designed the Gieves & Hawkes
flagship store in Savile Row, and in 2005 completed
a major update of his own original interiors. In the
intervening period he developed and designed a shop
fitting design manual for Gieves & Hawkes which
has established their brand image across the world.
Anthony Paine has applied the Gieves brand to the design
of more than 45 stores in cities across the world, including
Birmingham, Bath, Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Leeds,
Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo. This year he was highly
commended in the National Shopfitters Association awards
for his work on Savile Row.
