Katherine Worthington – Stone carver, Sculptor, Portraiture, Letter cutter, Mason and Fixer
Katherine Worthington has 17 years experience in restorative carving and original commissions. She can offer creative suggestions, modelling and design, discussion of stone techniques and fixing on location in support of her work.
She trained at Weymouth College in a 2 year NVQ course in masonry, architectural carving and letter cutting diploma. This was followed by a 2 year carving apprenticeship at York Minster. After 5 years in employment she became self employed to concentrate on architectural stone carving, sculpture and letter cutting. In this time she has accumulated a wide range of techniques based on the traditional skills but also employing modern tools and materials. Restoration includes delicate replacements and repairs to stone carvings including architectural mortar repairs. In recent years she has extended her skills to include figurative carving, statues and portraiture. She is extending this seam of creativity combined with her practical skills to the wider public art field. She works as a sole trader and proprietor alone or with architects and engages sub-contractors when required.
Over the years she has had extensive experience on many major and minor restoration projects on heritage sites in London and elsewhere. She has carved intricate decorations embellished with patterns, foliage, carved faces and animals. Examples include: St Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and the lion and unicorn on the London Hippodrome. Three of her carved portrait heads adorn the Chapter House of Westminster Abbey. Her letter cutting includes a plaque unveiled by HRH Duke of York at York Minster and another by the Lord Mayor of London in Paternoster Square. By way of public art she has created two church altars including a marble altar suite for SS.Peter and Paul’s, Wolverhampton, which contributed to the church winning the 2009 EASA President’s award and also the carving of Welsh and English inscriptions for the art timepiece at Ebbw Vale. In addition she serviced private commissions for memorial pieces. She has exhibited her free carving and portraits in London Galleries
