The Current Master

This year's Master is Edmund Fairfax-Lucy, printmaker and painter. He lives in Warwickshire

He studied printmaking at the City and Guilds of London Art School, 1963-67 and painting at the Royal Academy Schools, 1967-70.  He painted landscapes on a small scale and then still lives and flowers. In the 1980s he started painting the interiors of houses including some historic ones and became increasingly interested in building and in architecture.  By the 1990s, attempting to paint on a larger scale, he returned to still life, including still life in front of the landscape.  The seasons of the year and the time of day in any given place are the most important influences on his work. He likes to have an idea first and then find the subject; paint as much as possible out of his head and then go to nature
